Hotel de Rome, 2006
Opern Carrée
After an eventful history, the former Dresdner Bank building in Berlin has now found its place among Berlin’s top properties. Initially a smaller building on Bebelplatz with a view of the Unter den Linden boulevard, it was soon extended up to Französische Strasse. In the central axis three former cashier’s halls are located in the three covered inner courtyards.
The Lobby and Opera Court still have their historic glass roofs. The roof of the large transaction hall, which was destroyed during the war, is now covered by a modern glass roof. Three large vaults are located under the transaction rooms. The SPA area’s pool is located in the largest, the so-called jewellery vault under what is now the ballroom.

The design available at the time was extensively revised and, in close consultation with the heritage conservation authorities, planning for a careful renovation and extension was developed and supervised until completion. In the process, the historic old building was extended by 3 floors.
The interior design, created in collaboration with Studio Ziffer, combines classicist elements with elegantly modern interpretations of the new Berlin.
The Hotel De Rome is part of the Opern Carrée, a 7,000 m² inner-city block between Behrenstraße at Bebelplatz and Französische Straße at Gendarmenmarkt in the historic centre of Berlin. In addition to the Hotel de Rome, the historic commercial buildings Behren Palais and Markgrafen Palais were renovated in accordance with the preservation order and the new Gendarmen Palais office and residential building was constructed on the corner of Gendarmenmarkt. An underground car park was carefully integrated into the complex. A total of 44,000 m² gross floor area was planned and implemented.
„An eclectic mix of neoclassicism, Italian elegance and Berlin’s turbulent post-war history combine with lovingly designed rooms to create a harmonious ensemble that is unique among Berlin’s luxury hotels.“
— Christian Meinert
